Round-Robin Scheduling Guide

A practical framework for creating schedules that teams actually trust.

1. Pick the right format first

Use single round-robin when you need speed. Use double round-robin when fairness matters more than schedule length. For most rec leagues, one full cycle plus playoffs is the best balance.

2. Handle odd team counts early

If you have an odd number of teams, every round needs one bye. Plan that up front so no team gets clustered bye weeks.

3. Prevent common fairness issues

  • No immediate rematches in back-to-back weeks.
  • Keep home/away difference within one game where possible.
  • Avoid long home-only or away-only streaks.
  • Balance start times and venue assignments over the season.

4. Publish and communicate

Share a single schedule URL with teams and captains. Every update should be visible at the same link so nobody plays from an old spreadsheet screenshot.
